Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

October 1913. Dallas, Texas. "Two six-year-old newsboys. Odell McDuffy and Sam Stillman. There are many other of six and seven years selling here." Photograph and caption by Lewis Wickes Hine. View full size.
This is Joe Manning, of the Lewis Hine Project. I tracked down the stepson of Collins Odell McDuffey, and the son of Samuel Stillman. Neither had seen the photo. I will be interviewing them soon. I am working on this photo and four others taken in Dallas at the same time. I have been posting a diary of my search since I started about two weeks ago, so readers of my site can follow the search process in real time. Check out www.sevensteeples.com/dallas1.html
Sam may look like a little old man, but his diminutive stature may be more due to the fact that he was apparently not quite 6! In the Dallas census records there is always just one Sam(uel) Stillman listed, born in 1907. And only one Samuel Stillman is in the SSDI, birthdate Dec. 7, 1907, died in Dallas in 1993 at age 85. Gotta be him.
God, this could have been my dad! Pretty amazing photos.
Sensationalist journalism at its best.
Odell looks like a legitimate little boy, but not Sam. He's welcoming you to Munchkin Land.
