About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Piper's Opera House: 1966

Piper's Opera House: 1966

This time I was almost literally in Arthur Rothstein's footsteps when I took my Kodachrome slide of Virginia City's Piper's Opera House in August 1966, 26 years and some months after he was clicking his shutter. Had my family been there for him as they were for me, my father would have been 38, my mother 31 and my brother 2 going on 3. It would be another six years before they would be blessed by my existence. The photobombing International Scout wasn't the family car; our new Rambler wagon was parked some blocks away.
