Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.
This is my father in 1965. I think he's dressed up for a wedding. Scanned from a print. View full size.
Our back-fence neighbors had a very similar pool in their back yard, installed in 1958. Same coping, same tinted concrete deck and pebble paving, and even the same cigarette bucket and some of the lounge chairs. Your father's suit jogged a memory as well. I'm probably about 10 years older, but in 1965 I wore a similar mustard yellow vest with a dark blazer and slacks for what were called dressy occasions. At least your grandparents spared your father a necktie with a full Windsor knot.
