A 35mm Kodachrome my dad took with the Agfa Karat camera he bought in 1952 while a GI in occupied Germany.
My parents met as reporters for the Freeport Journal. View full size.
I appreciate the additional details from my dad's photo. Thanks, Anonymous Tipster!
I showed this photo to my dad, who joined the Freeport FD in 1958. While this was before he joined, he did remember the fire. On the left is Ford Hopkins Drug Store (see the sign in the window?) Angelo's Restaurant is on the right. They had a large freezer full of meat in the basement (under the sidewalk). After the fire the building collapsed into that basement. A short time later a very bad stench developed in the area. Seems all that meat was starting to rot!
He also verified my guess was correct - that is a Seagraves Fire Engine. The location is the north east corner of Stephenson St & Van Buren Ave.
Thank you for sharing it!
My father bought a Pentex camera while stationed in Japan in the 1970s. You can get them for dirt cheap on eBay compared to what they used to cost. Thanks to newer digital cameras, people are selling off their old film cameras.
The thought of all those melting aluminum tumblers brings tears to my eyes. And such a deal! 5 for a buck.
Beautiful shot.
Nice drama in this image. I hate to see the Payless burn like that.
The Agfa was a beautiful camera. Looks to be built like a tank. (Image via aamartin on Flickr)
