About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Sam's Front: 1908

New York City circa 1908. "Sam Kramer." The bodybuilder and wrestler whose flipside we saw a week ago. George Grantham Bain Collection. View full size.

He even has

Clark Kent's hairdo!

Those leggings just don't manage to complete the look, do they?

In fact, I just can't help laughing every time I scroll up to the image. My Mom is 85 and her legs pretty much look like that but at least hers match.

This reminds me

of a childhood story, "The Camel With the Wrinkled Knees."

Is there some reason

He's wearing The Mummy's tights?

Knuckle Ghosts!

Something you don't see every day, even on Shorpy.
