Clytie the water nymph

According to the ancient Greeks.

She was madly in love with Helios, the Sun. But he dumped her for another. It doesn't end well.

You can read all about her, and how she is metamorphosed into a heliotrope, in Ovid, Metamorphoses iv. 204, 234-56.

Like Mother Like Daughter

Ethel Barrymore Colt was, as been pointed out, the daughter of Ethel Barrymore. She had two brothers, Samuel Colt (named after their father's great-uncle) and John Drew Colt. Ethel the younger appeared in a number of plays in the 1930s and early '40s and made a come back in Stephen Sondheim's "Follies." She's primarily credited as singer and a lyricist. She performed with her mother (in blackface!) in a play called "Scarlet Sister Mary." Married to Romeo Miglietti, she died in 1977 of cancer.

One has to wonder what might have happened if Ethel had accepted the proposal of one of her other suitors -- some fellow named Winston Churchill.

At the mansion.

Myrtle, Daisy and Jordan.

Clytie = Clytemnestra?

Ah yes; the days when people had real names - No Brittanys or Colbys back then. I wonder if her father or husband read Homer.

Toes!

You know, I'm wondering. What on earth caused the woman on the right's toes to be so deformed? Birth defect, or bad shoes?

[They look that way because she's curling them. Toes have joints -- they bend. Try it! - Dave]

Mistaken Identity?

If that is Ethel Barrymore (the actress) she looks pretty darn good for a 47-year old (the age she would have been in 1926)!

[You might want to read that caption again -- the last name is Colt. This was Ethel's daughter. - Dave]

Girls' school

In the late 1920s, Misses Collier and Colt were classmates and teammates at Notre Dame Academy in Moylan, Pennsylvania. Each had the same name as her mother. Miss Collier was the daughter of David and Clytie Collier. According to a 1923 ship manifest at Ellis Island, they lived 1516 H Street NW in Washington, a block and a half from the White House. As for Ethel -- it's too easy.

Advice for Ethel

Stay away from uncle John.

Well suited

First time I've noticed but those bathing suits were buttoned over the left shoulder. And what beautiful garments they were too!
