Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

It's around 1942 in New York and here we have my Dad, Merwin Dembling, at right with his trusty 4x5 Speed Graphic camera, as a reporter with the now long-defunct New York newspaper "PM". He's obviously getting the goods on the story.
I asked him once what this shot was all about; he said it was something concerning the effect the war effort was having on the nylon stocking industry. This photo was made by his fellow reporter and photographer Dale Rooks (it says so on the back!) View full size.
