Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

The serious young man in the middle with his shirt buttoned all the way up is my grandfather, Lloyd Schulz. The schoolhouse was located near Gladbrook, Iowa. No one is sure who the photographer was, but he/she certainly had an eye for it. Grandpa was born in 1913, so I'm guessing this is early 1920s. View full size.

I assume this was a one room schoolhouse. Nice shot.
