Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

I've had this in my collection for several years. I have no idea who he is or where this was taken. I do wonder how long it took to grow this beard. I also wonder how long it took to wash and dry it. View full size.
I've had hair that long growing from my head, and it required some doing to keep out of things. I can't imagine having it growing out of your face! I wonder if he parted it all down the middle and tied it in back of his head in a ponytail, when he ate, kissed, etc.. It would be a conversation piece that created more than a little inconvenience!
