Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

March 1909. Hartford, Conn. "John Pento, 14 years old, has been selling for seven years. Daniel and Angelo, his twin brothers, are 7 years old, have been selling one year. Sell until 8 p.m. some nights." Photo by Lewis Wickes Hine. View full size.
This is Joe Manning, of the Lewis Hine Project. I just talked to the nephew of these three boys. He didn't know about the photograph. More later.
The 1910 census shows John Pinto still working for the Post Telegraph. John was born in Italy but the twins are American born. Parents, Domenico and Mary, also had three younger children. Sure hope John got a bigger jacket soon.
