About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Coal Creek: 1910

December 1910. Coal Creek, Tennessee. "Hard work and dangerous for such a young boy. James O'Dell, a greaser and coupler on the tipple of the Cross Mountain Mine, Knoxville Iron Co., in the vicinity of Coal Creek. James has been there four months. Helps push these heavily loaded cars. Appears to be about 12 or 13 years old." Photograph and caption by Lewis Wickes Hine. View full size.

F Battery: 1918

F Battery: 1918

"Lithnan & Latham, F Baltcry. 12 Peduri [?]" is the Library of Congress's uncertain transcription of the handwriting on this circa WWI negative. Which seems to say "F Battery," not Baltcry. "Lithnan" and "12 Peduri" are also iffy. Who can help us sort it out? National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
