Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Taken about 1902: The Foley Family poses outside their log home, built circa 1847, located on Keenan Road in the Helena area of upper New York State, Saint Lawrence County.
Standing (left to right): Herbert John Foley (born Jan 26, 1892), Herb's mother, Aunt Kate McCarthy, Miss Hurley (a dressmaker who helped get everyone ready for the picture), Herb's brother Jim and his brother Bernard
Seated: John Henry Foley (Herb's father), brother Tom seated on his knee (whose name was changed to Fr. Bernard when he was ordained a priest), sister Anne (on stool), Herb's Grandmother Foley whose husband Dennis came to this country from Ireland with his father Dennis, and his brothers, Patrick and Jeremiah.
Herb is my grandfather. It's odd that his mother isn't even mentioned by name and yet both the aunt and the dressmaker are named. I guess not too many people smiled for pictures back then!

San Francisco, 1966. International Days of Protest march on Market St. between Powell & Mason. Slide mount is dated August. Is the theater marquee a comment? The Woolworths at Powell & Market is now The Gap. The near buildings along Market are all gone, the area now occupied by Hallidie Plaza. I took this on 35mm Kodachrome. View full size.
August 1963. Here I am at world famous Hollywood & Vine, or in this case, Don't Walk & Vine. Hint: I'm not the one in the green skirt and heels. View full size.
August 1964. School building in Bodega, California, a year or so after location filming for Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds." And if you think my grammar is bad, you just don't remember the film's advertising tagline: "The Birds Is Coming!" 35mm Montgomery Ward brand slide film. View full size.
