About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Hudson Ohio 30's

Hudson Ohio 30's

Known as the Velocipede, these bikes were used on the railroad for track inspectors and many other employees. This was a great great step grandfather inspecting the rails on the Pennsy in the late 30's. The original picture was printed backward but due to technology today I was able to investigate and flip it correctly.

blacksmith shop

blacksmith shop

Inside shot of a blacksmith shop. Don't know place it was taken. Appears to have a car from the twenties in the back of the shop. Photographer unknown.

slow car, fast train

slow car, fast train

This photo was maybe taken by Loleta, Calif in Humboldt County. The car appears to have gotten tangled up with a train. Looks like early thirties Ford. Photographer unknown.

mill

mill

This is lumber mill in Glendale Humboldt County, Calif. Someone had written on the picture "first picture of the mill, 1883," this is about the time it was built. In the foreground you can see the logs coming out of the log pond. This photo had a lot of damage on the top third, I cleaned it up the best I could. Photographer is unknown.

Fields Landing

Fields Landing

This is the town of Fields Landing on north side of Humboldt Bay in Calif. The main road that goes to the foot of the bay leads to a whaling station. The large building to the front is known as the whalers inn. Postmark on this post card is dated 1912.
