About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

This is a shadow of the 360-degree camera on top of the Google Street View vehicle. Photo is on Fulton Street in San Francisco (in the 500 block). Nearby Laguna Street has a police unit following the Google camera around. Wonder if they were suspicious enough to get pulled over.

American Airlines Skysleeper

American Airlines Skysleeper

I believe this is Burbank airport on a rainy day in the early 1940s. The DC3 first in the line is an American Airlines Flagship Skysleeper. These aircraft were equipped with individual berths and required approximately 17 hours to fly coast to coast.
