About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Illumination on the Common, Keene, NH, Christmas Eve 1913. If I've got the orientation correct, the bit of white behind the bright light at right is the Congregational Church at the head of the square. This 50-foot spruce was Keene's first community Christmas tree.

View from the 2nd. Cong. Church tower

View from the 2nd. Cong. Church tower

We've seen several views of the front of the Congregational Church of central Keene, NH, but here's one from the rear. This is the left half of a stereoscopic view, photographed and published by local photographers French & Sawyer. To the right of the church is the Ball Block. The building immediately above the church contains the Bridgeman Block, where the photographer was located. To its right is the Cheshire House. Since the lot between the Bridgeman Block and the Cheshire House is empty, this photo probably dates between 1865, when fire destroyed the Colony Block located there, and 1870, when a new building was erected.
