About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Fall Festival Hungarian Dance, circa 1944

Fall Festival Hungarian Dance, circa 1944

Every fall in Cleveland, Ohio, there would be a harvest festival sponsored by a Catholic Church. The hall would be decorated with grapes and other fruits and vegetables. For several weeks beforehand we had to learn the steps to two or three dances that would be performed on festival day. My mother made my costume - we rented my brother's costume. That's me in the top row, third from the left. My brother is the boy at the end of the second row on the right. View full size.

My Grandpa the torpedo operator

My Grandpa the torpedo operator

My Grandpa worked on His Majesty's Indian Service - before India became independent and fought in World War II in Malta, Italy - when he was barely 18. This photo was taken when he was fresh in the navy - when he was 16/17.

After independence, he continued with the Indian Navy - when he was diagnosed with kidney malfunctions (kidney transplants were unheard of at that time) and started working in an Indian company when, eventually, he died of kidney failure.
