A man stands in front of a movie theater in Waco, Texas. Photograph by Russell Lee, November 1939. The film being shown is The Bad Man of Brimstone>. View full image.
I love the fact that the man looks like he could be a bit shifty and right behind him, almost like a label, are the words "The Bad Man".
D'oh! I saw the November and December and missed that the freakin' year was different!
But the star did shoot himself. That was interesting, wasn't it?
;)
Was trying out the limits of my "freeware" production stuff .. namely movie maker and a freeware audio editor .. and ended up with America Comes of Age - Part 3
The 1930s a decade of contrast
There is that great University of Virginia multi-media project on line called, America in the 1930s
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~1930s/front.html
In the beginning of this short documentary, I couldn't passing up quoting from that site, as I thought it really hit the nail on the head when it came to the 30s
“A decade of unparalleled contradiction and complexity.
Marked by the depths of depression on one end ...
and the heights of the modern age on the other
A dance between regional movements and culture ...
And the alphabet soup of big government projects.”
anyway ... project is available at youtube.com

And, of course Shorpy.com figures prominently in the credits and linked in the description.

The date of the picture is November 1939, meaning the picture was taken almost two years after the film debuted. In our time, when thousands of prints are struck of every movie so that they can debut in every city and town with a theater this sounds absurd, but in those days it was not uncommon for films to debut in the major cities and sort of ooze down to the smaller centers. 23 months does seem a bit much though.
…of the film, Wallace Beery, accidentally shot himself in the leg with a blank cartridge, causing him to miss two weeks of filming.
Also, it's interesting that the IMDB shows an opening date of 31 December 1937 for the film. I wonder whether it was unusual for a movie to be promoted a month (or possibly more) in advance, or if maybe if either the premiere or photo dates are off?
