Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Most were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.
I'm an archivist who has always loved old photos for the information they reveal that usually has nothing to do with the reason the picture was taken. Both street and interior views are often packed with thought-provoking detail, and images of people are always full of interest. Recently I have begun to actually take pictures and so now also appreciate and learn from the compositional and technical skills of the photographers highlighted here (Jack Delano comes to mind).
I check the site daily, part of the routine after reading the news and usually much more interesting than the news!
