About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

About Me

My name is Sam O. I've lived in New Jersey all of my life. I've enjoyed making photographs and studying photography for the past thirty years. It started with a black & white darkroom in my parents basement. I did some professional work for a time, mostly real estate and some table top stuff. I experimented with large format and medium format, some aerial and color darkroom work. My favorite photographers were (and still are) Eugene Atget, Walker Evans, George Tice and of course Ansel Adams for his teachings and craft. I've also collected vintage cameras, images and photographica for many years. These days I've followed the herd and gone completely digital and I must say that I am in awe of the the changes and possibilities. My focus now is restoring , printing and framing historic photographs.
