Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.
I will post my dad's and his brother's Kodachromes from the late 40's through the late 70's. As kids we only got to see these on special occasions when it was worth the trouble of setting up the projector.
We now can check them out any time and see details better than when they were projected on the screen, but it's still not quite the same without the hum and aroma of the projector. And popcorn!
Stay tuned for more Christmas, Mother in her finest, touring the Mediterranean in the Navy during the Korean War, camping with the family, boating and fishing in the 50's, and much more.
