Someone went to a great deal of effort to create a beautiful place to wait in vain for fresh air to "cure" the killer cough.

[Not necessarily in vain -- the body's immune system can clear the lungs completely of tuberculosis bacteria, or sequester them so that the infection becomes asymptomatic. The sanitariums provided the rest and nutrition responsible for countless cures and recoveries. -Dave]
