Beautiful shot

I watched "Hollywood Palace" running from 1964 to 1970 as a kid and never knew where it was taped, until now. What a great history this venue has.

It's a palace again

One of those rare Shorpy buildings that looks better today than it did decades ago.

Also had concerts here

I saw the band Danzig play here in 1990, Soundgarden was the opening band. One of the best concerts ever been to!!

Hollywood Palace

Now the Avalon Hollywood.

The theater started out as the Hollywood Playhouse when it opened in 1927. During the Depression it became the WPA Federal Theatre, where the Works Projects Administration would hold events. In the 1940s, as the El Capitan Theater it was used as a radio studio by CBS. In the 1950s it became a TV studio, mostly for variety shows. In fact it was the location where Richard Nixon gave his "Checkers speech." In 1963 it was briefly the Jerry Lewis Theater, when ABC used it for a variety show hosted by Jerry Lewis (who had worked there in the 1950s with Dean Martin on the Colgate Comedy Hour). Then Lewis's show morphed into "The Hollywood Palace Variety Show" in January 1964, which was when ABC renamed the building as The Hollywood Palace. In 1978 ABC sold the building and the new owner dropped the "Hollywood" from the name after four years of renovation. He made it into a live music theater. In 2002 it was sold again and renamed The Avalon. It is currently a nightclub focused on DJs.
