The Honorable William Albert Smoot, Jr.

William Albert Smoot, Jr. succeeded his father in the family mill, coal, and lumber business. W.A. Smoot & Company was the successor business to his father's firm. Smoot, Jr. organized the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, he also served as its first president, and he served as first president of the National Coal Dealers Association. While doing all of this he was also elected to the Virginia General Assembly. He later served as the mayor of Alexandria, he rescued The Alexandria Gazette (founded 1784) from bankruptcy, and he served on the Board of Visitors to Mount Vernon. His son Albert Ansley Smoot later became president of W.A. Smoot & Company.

W.A. Smoot, Jr. is buried here along with his wife their son Albert and his wife.

It appears that this branch of the Smoot family has no close connection with Oliver Smoot whom the 'smoot' unit of measure was named after in October 1958.

Ow! Ow!

That title's a tariffic pun.

Longevity

Autocar has been building vehicles for 116 years.

Oliver says --

This truck appears to be about 2.75 Smoots plus or minus an ear.

First on the scene

In a head-on collision the driver would indeed have "first hand knowledge" of the impact.

"The Little Truck That Couldn't"

Haul imported goods, that is.
