About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Happy Birthday to Us!

Happy Birthday to Us!

On his eighth birthday, Shorpy wishes all a Happy Valentine's Day, and raises his paw in a toast you -- yes, YOU -- for the comments and contributions that have kept us going over the years.

Circa 1914. "Cats in costume at birthday party with cake." Photo by Harry W. Frees, whose oddball oeuvre both delights and appalls. View full size.

To stay online without a paywall or a lot of pop-up ads, Shorpy needs your help. (Our server rental alone is $3,000 a year.) You can contribute by becoming a Patron, or by purchasing a print from the Shorpy Archive. Or both! Read more about our 2019 pledge drive here. Our last word on the subject is: Thanks!

Such clever kittens to greet us with a Shorpy cake. For the cleverest time-machine site ever.

Does anyone know for a fact ....are all these posed animal pictures stuffed animals or are they dead kittens stuffed? I know my 2 cats would never sit still for a picture like that.

[They were alive and Harry Frees was very, very patient. -tterrace]

Belated Happy Bday

Congrats on the eight years, every day of which has been wonderful from this side of the screen. Your work is very appreciated and I look forward to eight more interesting, informative and educational years. Keep 'em coming Dave!

At the age of 31

Happy birthday to mew,
Happy birthday to mew,
Happy birthday, Henry Sharpe Higginbotham,
Your years were too few.

Happy Birthday, Shorpy!

If I wore a Hatlo hat, I'd tip it to you!!!

Does anyone know

... if any of his failed exposures survived? Given his methodology and saintly patience, surely there had to be one or two that still remain?

Happy eighth anniversary! Many thanks for unearthing thousands of almost lost treasures along the way -- and more than a few pithy captions, too!
