Our 1967 vacation first took us to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks; then on the way to Yosemite we went through Fresno, where I took this Kodachrome slide of the Fulton Mall three years after its opening. Pedestrianizing Fulton Street, with designs by architect Victor Gruen and landscape architect Garrett Eckbo, was a major part of Fresno's urban renewal program of the 1960s. Ironically, now that the big chain stores seen in my slide are long gone, the city's plan to revitalize the area by re-introducing traffic onto Fulton Street is underway. View full size.
