I love this one. This is my Dad's (on the left) first night on the town in the states after more than three years fighting with the 27th ID in the Pacific, around October 1945, near Seattle. He arrived in Washington state from Japan that day after being part of the first occupational forces. These guys are happy to be back! View full size.
Cazzorla's Dad and his buds are giving up a few details about themselves. Dad is an infantry lieutenant and has the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. In 1947 all recipients of the CIB were retroactively awarded the Bronze Star Medal; many former infantrymen never got the word or were too busy creating new lives to care about it, but I hope your dad received his.
The man in the dark shirt has no insignia, but that is an officer's shirt. Next we have an officer from the Quartermaster Corps. On the right is what appears to be a captain in the Ordnance Corps; his ribbons are indistinct. His 27th Infantry Division patch is clearly visible; a New York National Guard division, the division participated in the invasions of the Gilbert Islands, Saipan, and Okinawa, then were part of the Occupation forces.
The Shasta Cola bottles, assortment of glasses, two ice buckets, and the packs of Camels and Luckies suggest they've been celebrating for a while. After what they went through they deserved a party.
