Three buldings on left remain

The three buildings on the left side of City Hall, which are on Broadway between Murray Street & Warren Street, still remain standing and mostly unchanged.

I know

where my maternal grandfather was, up in the Pelham Bay neighborhood of the Bronx. He was about six years old when this photo was taken. Would be working on the delivery wagon for B. Altman in a few years. Went on to serve in the US Navy in WW 1 and become a Lieutenant in the NY Fire Department.

Also, love the National Shoe & Leather Building to the left of the City Hall cupola. The 12 story structure at 271 Broadway was acquired by Chemical Bank in 1921 and replaced by Chemical's new headquarters renamed 270 Broadway.

Now named for a crook

Behind City Hall is the New County Court House, known today as the Tweed Court House, home of the NYC Board of Education.

Tweed was a crook, and so were the members of his ring. (Look up "$41,190.95—for “Brooms, etc.")

When the building was restored it was renamed "The Tweed Court House" (It's written in stone in the cornerstone.) Named after a crook, who stole millions in 19th century dollars.

Not an aerial view but ....
