About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Every mornin' at the mine you could see him arrive
He stood six-foot-six and weighed two-forty-five
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to big John

It's all in the name.

Could there have been a more appropriate photographer?

He Loaded Sixteen Tons

Yet owes his soul to the company store and is just another day older and deeper in debt.

Big Bad John

I must have listened to that 45 hundreds of times with my brother on the old hi-fi. Jimmy Dean and Johnny Horton singles giving us stories of other places and times. Good times when we were young and not jaded by everyday life.
