The Demise of Rope Lines

Perhaps the reason we don't see them as much now is that we no longer wander into the sea wearing 40 pounds of wet wool?

Rope lines into the surf

I find it interesting just how many of these vintage photographs of beach scenes include rope lines into the surf. I'm curious when these fell out of favor, because I have never seen this in my entire 65 years of life, many summers of which were spent on the beach.
