Note the two entrances to the subway (East Boston Tunnel) carved into the rear. There was little respect for historic buildings in Boston back then.

That Latin

Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem is a Latin passage and the official motto of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The phrase is often loosely translated into English as "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty."
