Although the college boy seems to be the important figure - for me it is the weedy man in the back. Who is he? What is he doing there? This weird posture, his hands - is rolling a cigarette perhaps? This photo is very poignant and a bit creepy at the same time. Definitely worth more than one look.

Northwestern State University in Natchitoches was Louisiana Normal College until 1944. "Normal" indicated teacher-training; it came from French for accepted rules (norms), which is what teachers were supposed to teach.
