50 Years Anniversary: 1929

50 Years Anniversary: 1929

January 1st or 2nd, 1929. Tivoli Schouwburg, Rotterdam, Netherlands. I found this photograph in an album of my parents labeled [1931-1934]. No information was given, only a number 13290004 and the name of the production company, Nederlandsch Photo-Bureau "Polygoon" was to be found on the back side. With the help of Spaarnestad Photo we were able to find out what happening was recorded here, and where it took place.

The photo was taken on January 1st or 2nd, by Polygoon Photographer Leeflang. The subject is the 50th anniversary of the "Twentsche Bankvereeninging te Rotterdam", door personeel een feestje a/d. directie aangeboden in Tivoli; groep van de feestvierenden/a party offered by staff to the management in Tivoli; group of celebrants says the caption. I know my mother worked at this Bank, at the time she was 24 years of age, and with the help of an old photograph of her of 1931 I think I have found her in the crowd. I doubt if my future father was already in the picture at that time, his age at that time was only 17. Tivoli was a theatre in Rotterdam, built in 1890, but the place where this happening took place must have been the Winter Garden, which housed the Royal American Bioscope, the first permanent movie theatre in the Netherlands, opened in 1903. The Electro Royal American Bioscope Company was a Rotterdam-based traveling cinema, led by F.P.J. Goeman, who also ran the Tivoli-winter gardens there. View full size.
