March 1943. "Baltimore, Maryland. Man repairing an umbrella." Medium format acetate negative by John Vachon for the Office of War Information. View full size.
The sun's out and he doesn't look like an umbrella user. I was born in 1946 and remember the umbrella repair guy, the sharpening guy and the rags and paper guy. Umbrellas were repaired at the local commercial hub. Sharpening was done door-to-door with a wheeled pedal-powered grindstone. The rag man would cruise the alleys and had a very loud "Hey! Rags! Paper!" spiel. Downtown had peanut, hot pretzel and newspaper vendors and attendants at the public restroom.
Beside the wall hydrants maybe? You would think that the bag would have an umbrella repair kit.
