March 1943. "Bob Daugherty, a driver for the Associated Transport Company, at the wheel of a Brown truck on U.S. Highway Route 29 near Culpeper, Virginia." Medium format acetate negative by John Vachon for the Office of War Information. View full size.
Does it flip up or there just isn’t one?
I like the manual air conditioner handles on the doors. Rarely seen these days.
The lever on the steering column is known as the hand valve and applies the trailer brakes only. Really handy if you have to start on a grade. On the floor is the foot feed or gas pedal and the brake pedal or treadle valve that applies all the brakes. If you have never driven a truck with air brakes it's an eye opener how sensitive that treadle valve is. At slow speeds it can have you closely inspecting the inside of the windshield if you're not careful. I think Bob is a true professional. A clean uniform with cap and a shine on his shoes.
I was on Highway 29 in Culpeper several times a couple of weeks ago. I saw a lot of trucks but none like this one. Must have just missed it.
Dos anyone know what the lever on the steering column is used for.? Looks to be hydraulic and must be important.

I was this many days old when I found out Diamond T built (labeled) their trucks for the Brown company, who were body manufacturers.
[According to the Internet, Browns were rehabbed, rebadged Corbitt trucks. - Dave]
Not sure if it's the same model, but here's a Brown truck used by Associated Transport.
