March 1943. "Clovis, New Mexico. Private Clarence Stephens of Streator, Illinois, a member of the U.S. Army Railroad Battalion stationed at Clovis, with Sidney Mack, engine inspector at the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad shops. They are inspecting one of the 5000 Class freight engines." Acetate negative by Jack Delano, Office of War Information. View full size.
You know you're in trouble.
I am not a railroad man but I am good with a wrench. The excessive grease at that wheel and up thrown up behind Mr. Mack's head would indicate a problem they are identifying.
I always marvel at steam engines. The sheer size and intricate parts all designed without computers. I didn't know that there was a U.S. Army Railroad Battalion. I'd love to see more pictures involving them and the wartime railroads!
I'm also glad that in the last few years we've seen a resurgence of steam programs here in the US.
