May 1949. Washington, D.C. "Charles Farrar on Harley-Davidson motorcycle." 4x5 inch acetate negative by the African-American photographer Robert H. McNeill (1917-2005). View full size.
"All The Gear All The Time". That's what I was taught and what I taught about riding motorcycles. And believe in. Saved me twice.
Didn't have that then. No gloves, low cut shoes, no jacket, on and on. Then again, attitudes were a little different.
When the war ended and my dad got out of the Navy, there was a glut of Army surplus Harleys. He decided for $50 he should have one. His girlfriend at the time (my mom) was not happy. It only took him a week before he laid it down on a wet road and walked away with some minor boo-boos and road rash.
Mom told him he's allowed one wedding next month, either to to Harley or her. He chose wisely, apparently -- I came along in 1950.
Maybe not the Boss Hog, but surely fully dressed up! Very fancy.
