This is my great-grandfather, Aaron L. Gehman with his family on their farm in New Britain Township, Pennsylvania. My grandfather, Erwin Gehman, is the youngest boy leaning against the fence. Erwin was born in 1891 so judging by his age in this picture, we believe it was taken around 1896 or 1897. The other people in the picture are my great-grandmother, Catherine (for whom I am named) and my grandfather's three brothers. We're not certain of the identity of the older lady but my father believes it was a family friend, not a relative. The dog's name was Prince. The house is still standing, though it looks somewhat different now and has a decidedly more suburban setting. View full size.
I love all of those old professional photos of farm houses. It was such a big occasion for the family, and they almost always put on their best clothes for the photo.
It's always great to see the houses wuth their fences and verandahs. Can you post a modern photo?
