Trouble in River CityTrouble, oh we got trouble,
Right here in River City!
With a capital "T"
That rhymes with "P"
And that stands for Pool,
That stands for pool.
We've surely got trouble!
Right here in River City,
Right here!
Gotta figger out a way
To keep the young ones moral after school!
Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble...

Service for one??Dug by hand yet? And in frozen ground. That would put a person under for sure.
Memories from my father My father once told me that when he was a teenager , he and his brothers dug graves at the Cascade Michigan cemetery. In the winter, they used a pickax to break the top layer of frozen soil, then dug the rest. That was in the early 1930s. He’s buried there now.

Opie Taylor archetypeThat's an all-American good-looking boy, with cute features, great hair, and large hands and feet for an age I assume to be somewhere around seven. Maybe he grew to be tall. I hope the look of consternation on his face is down to a combination of curiosity and squinting into the sun, rather than from cares too great for one so young to bear. And I hope he had enough warm clothing when the Michigan winter came.

No. 10 Steel DrumThat's an early steel drum over there by the left corner of the building. Probably for oil or maybe kerosene, and known by its ICC Specification, No. 10.
Its shape was designed so that it could be handled with the same equipment as had been used for handling the wooden barrels it replaced, and furthermore its bilge shape added strength and resisted dents.
So how did they manufacture a container of this shape? They welded a steel cylinder (even earlier, riveted side seams were used), rolled in the head at each end, then filled the drum with high pressure water until it swelled to the desired shape!

Dairy barn catsFor the first 25 years we were married, my wife's uncle was a dairy farmer in Charlotte County, Virginia (he's now retired). We never had to buy a cat during that time. As our cats aged and died, her uncle always had a new litter of barn cats for our kids to choose from.
Tasty TreatMy grandparents milked the cows morning and evening. Always an audience of interested cats seemed to show up. They both were able to angle a teat in the direction of a cat and shoot fresh milk all over their faces. It was very funny. They also kept a small hubcap in the corner that they filled with milk when they were done. When I was there, I got to run the manual separator in the pantry.

24th Infantry RegimentAn all black unit founded in 1869 and participated in combat in numerous wars. The motto "San Juan" on the unit insignia on the hat and lapels commemorates the regiment's participation in capturing San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. They were utilized at the Infantry School at Fort Benning when this picture was taken and then later fought in the Pacific. Still in existence, although obviously no longer a segregated unit.

Comic-strip booksAs a kid I used to clip my favorite strip, Peanuts, and paste it into a scrapbook, the short black-and-white dailies as well as the color weekend funnies. Imagine my amazement (and retroactive feeling of wasted time) when I discovered that a publisher of books did more or less the same thing and came out with annual collections of the same strips.
Inquiring minds want to knowFirst of all, they already have books of comic strips all around them, why would they separate them and re-make them again? Was it just busy work to keep them occupied? Secondly, what is the boy using to cut out the comic strip? Those aren't like any scissors I have ever seen, nor is it a paper cutter. What is the point of this exercise?

Powder monkeyI spent a number of summer vacations with my aunt and uncle at a Nevada gold mine in company housing. I ate many a meal seated in the kitchen upon just such a box. The best meals ever, too. She was a real cook and feeding hungry son, husband, and one growing nephew.

Like a house on fireThis image has been haunting me for the last two days. I’m fortunate that I do not live in an era or place where houses burn down like that with any frequency. I don’t mean to sound overly dramatic, but the house thoroughly consumed by flame has an apocalyptic look to it.
Indefinitely SuspendedOn my third time back to this breathtakingly dramatic image, I am left wondering what was the purpose of the pieces of wood hanging from the roof of next cabin?

Now, it's almost all soybeans and corn, which we turn into chickens via Perdue and others. The packing house complex sprawled over a wide area of Cambridge. There are current plans to revitalize the remaining building.

Faint lettering above "Phillips" over the warehouse door is still visible in Google Street View. Railroad track is visible but no longer used and a water tower similar to the one shown here is also visible. Across the street is the footprint of a vary large demolished industrial complex.

LighthouseA few miles from our home is the village of Boalsburg, Pa. The community has preserved its "Lighthouse," which contained a waterwheel that supplied Direct Current to all the structures in the village. When the Lighthouse operator awoke and activated the wheel, all the lights came on. And when he decided it was time for bed, he shut down the wheel and the town went dark. Some progress has been achieved in this field in the past century-plus.
A Town Without Municipal TaxesA Town Without Municipal Taxes
The American City, Volume 7, July-December 1912
Silverton, Colorado, a thriving town of nearly 3,000 people, at an altitude of over 9,000 feet, has the distinction of being one of the very few municipalities in the United States where no city tax is levied. The running expenses are paid from the income of the water and light systems, both owned and operated by the municipality, and from various licenses.
The town owns its teams, sprinklers and wagons, and has recently completed and entirely paid for a handsome city hall costing $55,000. In this building there is sufficient room for all the city offices, court room, assembly room and fire apparatus.
The successful operation of municipally owned public utilities in Silverton extends over a period of nine years.
For electric current the rate to very small consumers is 7½ cents net per k.w. hour, and to large consumers a little over 5 cents net. The water rates vary for different classes of users. A one-family residence of four rooms pays $8 per annum, with $1 extra for each additional room; or the consumer may install a meter at his own expense, the rental varying from 45 cents to 10 cents per thousand gallons, with a minimum charge of $20 per year. All water bills are subject to a 15 per cent discount if paid by the 5th day of the month.
