St. Helena HighwaymanHe's just leaving Rutherford, northward on today's St. Helena Highway 128. The old train station at Runtherford would be to the left and there is still a road sign with mileage to St' Helena, Calistoga and Lakeport in approximately the same location.

There's a photo to break your heartThat poor girl.
I think if I were sleeping in that bed, I'd stuff some paper in that hole in the wall. Otherwise, I'd never sleep, watching for bugs crawling in and out.
Of course she had bigger worries than a few bugs.
I hope things got better for her.

'Board in BrooklynAccording to "Samantha Brown's Places to Love," an enterprising couple have opened a massive indoor shuffleboard court in Brooklyn and are having to turn people away. Shuffleboard has become "big" again with the hipsters who have gravitated to Brooklyn and the DUMBO neighborhood.
The couple state that it is popular because it is hard to be really bad at shuffleboard, but it's equally hard to be really good at shuffleboard.

The non-survivorThe D&RGW’s K-36 class of locos may be one of the best preserved anyplace. Eight of the ten from this order are still operational, either on the Durango & Silverton or the Cumbres & Toltec. A ninth, #483, underwent partial cosmetic restoration and stabilization by the C&TS but is currently parked “out back” at the Chama yard with an uncertain future.
485, though, was the hard-luck kid of the bunch. She crashed into the turntable pit at Salida in 1954 and was too badly damaged to be worth repairing; she was scrapped the next year.

Maybe the Maytag wringer's on the fritzMy maternal grandmother had a Maytag wringer, (originally gasoline-engined, but converted to electric). We spent a summer with her when I was six. Once when the Maytag blinked, we washed in her identical pot and wrung by hand. I remember adding "bluing" to the rinse to de-yellow the whites. She was a little more fashionable than this woman. But my paternal grandmother, who lived for some years in Arkansas, was not. I had to look twice to make sure this wasn't her. I can't say definitively not.

What are you looking at?I love Marion Post Wolcott's work, as well as that of the other FSA photographers. This piece is particularly fine, with its heroic treatment of an ostensibly prosaic subject. John Vachon's stockyard workers on lunch break was another striking example of especially memorable imagery.
With its daily presentation of so much exemplary work, I would be more than a little surprised were Shorpy not assigned viewing in certain pedagogic realms.

The Decorative UrgeVarious thinkers have posited that there are four basic human drives: food, sleep, sex, and self-preservation.
But this image, like so many here that show the faces of poverty, shows that no matter how down-and-out, humans have a basic urge to decorate their surroundings.
