Looking for Judge HealyYour great-grandfather successfully defended my uncle in 1940. He was a brilliant defense attorney. I have been researching that trial. I would like to know more about this very unusual man.

Nun eventThis photo is quite a work of art itself. Any details? Photographer?
Superb! What a fabulous photograph! It reminds me of a painting my father did when I was a young school girl. He painted two nuns in silhouette walking down a path. I always thought of two sisters I had in school at the time -- Sister Mary Margaret, a sweet and loving soul, and Sister Teresa Agnes, who terrified me!

63 Stagg Street, Brooklyn, April of 1929. If anyone has a photo of the current stoop I'd love to see it.
63 Stagg StreetThe Bird's Eye mode on maps.live.com shows several building fronts reasonably well, but I'm not sure which side of the road this shot is supposed to be. I'm thinking it may be the three-story dark red building on the north side of the street, one building east of the intersection.
[63 Stagg is part of Stagg I, a condominium encompassing 63-69 Stagg Street, completed in 2005 by Scarano & Associates. At least that's what my Google search turned up. Nearby, 61 Stagg has its own Website. - Dave]
Stagg StreetI looked for it on Google Earth, and it looks like the North side of the street (or left hand, heading East on Stagg).
Thanks for the info. At least it's still there, and not renamed completely.
[The satellite photos you see on Google Earth (or any other mapping service) can be years old. The buildings pictured in them may be long gone. - Dave]

Taken in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn in 1959, on New Lots Avenue. This young fellow would come down to the street with his accordion and start to play. Invariably he would draw a number of children to his street concert. His mother would look on approvingly from behind the door. View full size.

Photo from 1927. This is my father, David Berger, at the age of 10. He came from a Brooklyn, N.Y., from a family that had a weakness for jokes and humor of every type imaginable. All of his siblings, with one exception, were natural comedians, offering the world laughs and smiles every chance they got. The fact that his mother, my Granny Rose, agreed to be a part of this "unusual photo," combined with the mischievous look on Dad's face attests to that. (The owner of the legs standing atop Rose's shoulders is lost in anonymity). I have no idea exactly what Dad is holding, but I'm thinking it's an equally young Stanley Cup.
My very special and unique father died in 1973 at the age of 55. View full size.
ClotheslinedRe "The owner of the legs" ... Those pants are (obviously) empty. It must be laundry day, your dad is holding a Clorox jug.
Ahhh ... Clorox! Thanks, AT, for identifying the "Stanley Cup" for what it truly is.
The leg thing was a joke of sorts. The first time I saw the picture, I genuinely thought it was a person standing on what appeared to be a none-too-wide support at the top of the fence.
The realization that it wasn't someone at all came when I discovered the unbuckled pants. And thus, when displaying the picture thereafter, I would play it straight and bemoan the fact that I couldn't figure out who was "standing on Rose's shoulders."
But I was truly mystified about what Dad was holding. So, I now know more than before.
Thanks!

Recently using the internet and telephone, I was able to locate 5 of my classmates. We are all in our mid 70's. Together we arranged a reunion. Over 50 years had passed. It was wonderful to meet and see each other again. Later I found this photo and emailed it to them. Together we were able to remember the names of all our classmates, and most of our teachers. We still communicate via email and telephone. View full size.

Posted by Fathead - 09/02/2020 - 1:55pm -

Photo taken on the boardwalk of Coney Island around July, 1948 by my mother on a family outing from the Bronx. The Dodgers were still in Brooklyn and Steeplechase park was one of the most creative and exciting amusement park rides of its day.
Dad was a milk truck driver for Sheffield Farms Dairy one of the earliest suppliers of hygienically sold milk in the city. His "trucker's wallet" on a pocket chain was part of men's wardrobe in the day.
Steeplechase park included many fun family attractions including a gravity-powered ride in which people raced each other while riding wooden horses that glided along parallel metal tracks over a long and curving course. I was too little to ride what was considered a bit dangerous adventure. An entire family could spend the day at Steeplechase, picnicking and walking through the gardens. Of course, they'd also likely end up splurging on a few of Steeplechase's carnival games or other rides not included in the combination ticket.
Steeplechase park opened for the 1897 season and was an immediate success. Tilyou's park was more than just a collection of rides. He had well-maintained gardens and benches and areas where families could picnic. Bands played it closed in 1964.

The "Canal Line" railroad, so-called, was constructed in 1847-8 from New Haven, Connecticut to Northampton, Massachusetts to replace the failed Farmington (later New Haven - Northampton) Canal, running over roughly the same course as the canal. The brownstone arch spans the Tenmile River in Cheshire, Connecticut. In 1987 Interstate 691 was built though this site and the bridge was replaced with a modern banality. Numerous railroads have owned the old line over the years and all rail traffic on this part of the line ceased very soon after its replacement. A rail-trail extension through this area is expected. I took this picture on June 4, 1967 when I was 16. Kodachrome, of course! View full size.
MoreI heve recently read that, about 1900, many of the original Canal Line bridges were replaced in order to support heavier trains. It is entirely likely that this was one of the new bridges. The heavy brownstone blocks come from quarries in Portland, Conn., alongside the Connecticut River about 14 miles to the east, from where they can be barged down-stream to Brooklyn, Boston and beyond, for its popular use in the facades of 19th Century town-houses. It would have been (relatively) easy to bring them to New Haven, and straight up the existing rails.
About 17,000 years ago, as the glaciers melted back, the Tenmile being a tributary of the larger Quinnipiac River, which at some point had become naturally dammed, in neighboring Meriden, leaving this whole area long under the waters of large Glacial Lake Southington, into which very great quantities of sand and clay were deposited. The presence of rather yielding materials necessitated the use of many driven pilings underneath the supporting structures of area bridges over these rivers. This would have been a LOT easier to do in 1900 than in 1848. I also suspect that considerable track re-grading may have been done along here, to raise the track above occasional contemporary flooding, as the area is rather flat, and an original Farmington Canal culvert over the Tenmile (1828, also a stone arch bridge) acts as an impediment to rapid draining in the area, as does a 1931 concrete arch bridge below that, three arches in a little more than a mile!
