The Grotto, a gentleman's resort at 449 Procter St. in Port Arthur, Texas. Two men are standing behind the bar and three “gentlemen” (two of them look rather scruffy) are coming in for service. In the background there are mirrors decorated with arches and ornately carved columns. Three Christmas wreaths hang on the mirrors. Spittoons are at the ready, with leaks from the pipes and unidentified stains on the floor.
Denton L. Burch was the proprietor of the resort. View full size.

They Say MoreI love the logic: not only should you say it with Shutan's Christmas cards, but you should do it because they say more. Than what? Other cards? Or not using cards at all? (Maybe I'm over-thinking it, but I still love that message.)
As for the pen-and-pencil sets and pen stands, I'm sure they'd come in handy for those Christmas cards, but I always thought of them as the classic Bar Mitzvah gift.

Cynthia, Arlene, Agnes, and Rosilyn is written on the margin of this photo showing my teenaged future mother (in the dark skirt) with three classmates, at some park or botanical garden in Brooklyn, New York near the end of World War II.
Please proposeHow I would love to know the location, and there are obvious clues for people who know Brooklyn. So many more people view the main gallery than the member gallery (which is a shame, really -- hey, there're great photos every weekend, everybody), and that's why I'd like to ask the powers-that-be if they might consider, as is their practice, sometimes to elevate a post from the member to the main gallery, where many Brooklynites could identify the stack and the building. I would consider that a very special Shorpy Christmas present, plus it would bring aenthal's mom Arlene to a deservedly wider audience.
At Prospect Park in BrooklynI asked my mother. She says the location in Brooklyn was Prospect Park.

This is my mom, Tam, and her younger sister Joan. It is a scan of an old roll film negative so I have no notes or dates. Based on their ages, this would be sometime in the mid-1930s, probably the winter of 1933-34. They were living outside of Philadelphia at the time but this seems to have been taken elsewhere. I suspect it was during a visit to grandparents in Reading, PA, likely over Christmas. View full size.
For Want of InsulationAside from the cute kids, this photo perfectly illustrates the consequences of not insulating the attic of a home. Heat radiating upward melts the snow and makes ice dams that overflow the gutters. Compare the upper gutters to the lower ones attached to the porch roof, which has no heat exfiltration.

My older brother Jon proudly showing off his Sears Spaceliner bicycle he got for Christmas 1965. A little research I did shows that bike was $39.88 new (About $289 today). The "engine" in the middle was an aftermarket battery operated piece that made cool motorcycle sounds.
As for me, I'm not sure what's going on with that hat, it looks as if I have cowboy boots on, but I seem to be "unarmed"!
Pros and ConsI had one of those add-on motors, too! At first, it seemed a good thing. Before that, we used to use clothespins to make playing cards fwap-fwap against the spokes for effect. The motor would prevent the spokes from coming loose and making the wheels go out of true. But the batteries didn't last so long, and they were expensive. Eventually, we went back to cards and clothespins.

The "Canal Line" railroad bridge in Milldale, Connecticut carried rail traffic over U. S. Route 6-a, the Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike. The highway was excavated in 1914 to permit trolleys of the Waterbury & Milldale Tramway to pass under the rails, that track coming by only a few feet from where this was taken. The "Canal Line" railroad approximately followed the course of the old Farmington Canal (1828-1847) from New Haven, Connecticut to Northampton, Massachusetts, and opened in 1848. It has had a number of owners, but was still in the "New Haven" system when I took this picture on June 4, 1967, when I was 16. Kodachrome, of course!
The bridge clearance was marked adequate for most big trucks, but was not. The road-bed angles upward on both sides, and drivers unfamiliar with the easy work-around sometimes got seriously stuck under it. I had once seen a brand-new "reefer" truck full of Christmas trees that had wedged and split wide open here. In the 1980's the track grade was raised about two feet as part of the Interstate 691 project, and all rail traffic ceased on the line a couple of years later. Today the bridge is part of a popular rail-trail, which (hopefully) will span the entire 72 miles of the original route, eventually. The self-service Ice House (just right of the packy) endures to this day! View full size.
CNI don't know what excites me more: the little red caboose or the sight of two Canadian National freight cars rolling through the USA.

Walter on his Dodge tipper, outside the Belgian Chateau they were billeted at somewhere near Boom, between Brussels and Antwerp. Winter 1944.
Quiet Mike: "You said you were in Antwerp for Christmas?"
Walter: "I went to stay with my friends at Estelle’s. I went up there, we’d got a wagon, a liberty wagon, and we went up to somewhere not far from Fort Seven, I can’t think of the name of it. It was by Fort Seven. Then I’d got a tram into the city and went to see my friends, and it was bad weather, it was snowing. I left Estelle's, early enough, and got the tram back, but there was some sort of hold up, and when I’d got back the liberty wagon had gone. So, I didn’t really know what to do, and it was snowing as well. I got back onto the road, and was walking back. I didn’t know what I was going to do mind you.
"Anyway I started walking back, and looking around all of I sudden I saw headlights. I waved him down, and it was my mate. It was our dispatch rider, George Rand. I couldn’t believe it! He’d pinched a truck and gone up into Antwerp. It was my good fortune really. I stopped him and got in. He drove us to the gate and parked it by the side of the road. I said 'Are you on duty?', 'No, I borrowed it.' Good for me, and I got back in time." View full size.
