I submit this photo for the 60th Anniversary of the end of an American institution, the small city streetcar. Shorpy followers will have undoubtedly noticed that a great many of the early 20th Century streetscape photos show the ubiquitous streetcar which in those days was people's primary means of transportation.
The occasion here was the ceremonial last run of streetcars in Johnstown, PA at 5 PM, Saturday afternoon, June 11, 1960. There were streetcars remaining in other large cities such as Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and San Francisco, but Johnstown was the last of the small city systems to be converted to bus operation.

Coverall requiredI feel for the poor guy in the back, lying on the ground in his coverall, probably putting on chains. I wonder if he brought the coverall and is the driver, or if he's someone there at the turnout, putting on chains as a service.

When last we saw Charles and Harriet, my parents were shown on their wedding day https://www.shorpy.com/node/4225. A few years later, and here I am... celebrating my first Earlham College May Day. A re-creation of the English May Day festivals, students took the parts of village participants, from maidens wending around the May Pole to Morris dancers. (Think Dad was usually a jester.) In the interests of political correctness, the college has ceased this activity -- something that, in the past, had been awaited for every fourth year. Kodachrome print. Update: Just found the original slide, and Mom had notated this as 1950.

Of particular interest to me are the yellow Kodak boxes and camera case on the lower shelf to the right - possibly some of the very same boxes that I'm working with right now? View full size.

Disneyland, 1969. Kodachrome slide by my dad. View full size.
It was a Small World in 1969It's A Small World was one of my favorite Disneyland rides. If it was hot outside it was cool inside. When I graduated from high school in Long Beach in 1966 Disneyland was a great and relatively inexpensive date night back then. Grad Night was filled with high school graduates and dates for a few dollars and my date Jill and I were there. By 1969 I was in the Air Force flying over Laos and the Ho Chi Minh Trail. I see two Marines walking through the scene and wonder if they are from Camp Pendleton on liberty with Vietnam in their futures. My 6th grade teacher, Mr Kim (a WW2 Marine), was one of the engineers on the Disney train and in 1995 I introduced him to my 5 year old daughter at the Small World train stop. He invited us into the cab of his diminutive locomotive and we rode around the park in style. I've been watching the Ken Burns documentary on Vietnam and Disneyland in 1969 was obviously in a different world.
