Archer had worked at Cyclops during the 1920s and again during WWII leaving his wife to run the camera shop for the duration of the war. Pictured here are four of his fellow workers, whose names are unknown, and his daughter Shirley A. Archer, also my aunt, on the far right. She was still in high school at the time.

As I grew up on Esdras Place in Riverside (now Windsor), Ontario, in the mid-1950s there were some big parties. Harry Slobasky is pictured here ready to document the shenanigans. The man wearing the fedora behind him bears a striking resemblance to Howard Hughes. Their home had a large basement rec room with wet bar, and on Saturday we would visit and be treated to Coca-Colas. Racy artwork adorned the walls. This may have been the final stop for a progressive dinner and a party to ring in the New Year. My father took this Kodachrome slide. A happy New Year and a big thank you to all the folks at Shorpy. My father, John McIntyre, took this Kodachrome in 1959. It shows a group of Ford Motor Company of Australia staff and wives attending the Melbourne Cup at the Flemington Racecourse. Third from left is Charlie Smith, and my mother, Betty, is looking sideways in the brown hat. The man in the Homburg hat is "Norrie" Norris, and standing in front of him is his wife Trixie. What you see here is the Aussie version of a "tailgate party" prior to the races. It is still a dress-up affair to this day - click here for photos. View full size.

...with my Mom and me in West Covina, California back about 1959. Dad, as usual, took the picture, in 35mm Kodachrome.
She often closed her eyes when a flash picture was taken. I just often looked disgruntled or apathetic, or in this case, gazing into space. Despite all that, I have great memories. I was the only kid in our family for several years. The presents rolled in from my relatives. Life was good for a little boy. View full size.
