Army traditionAs long as there have been radios in the Army it has been the unwritten rule that the smallest guy carries the radio.
The rifles are the trusty M1 Garand, caliber .30, the standard rifle of the Army from 1936 or so until 1957 or so. Of course, National Guard units would have them much longer. This rifle did much to bring us victory during WWII; it is an 8 round, semi-automatic weapon. The German and Japanese (and our British allies) were typically armed with bolt-action rifles with much slower rates of fire. This is a wonderful, legendary rifle, much prized by collectors and shooters, and can be purchased today from the government.
The caps are the ill-conceived Ridgeway cap, a rigid, non-collapsable thing that would get crushed in a duffle bag. It was replaced by an also ill-conceived soft cap that lacked any military appearance and any recognizable shape. Military uniforms are designed by committees.

This is my grandfather, John J. Hennessy, also known as Black Jack. He's photographed just to the side of the GPO in New York City, probably in the late 50's or early 60's, note the Horn and Hardart Automat just behind him. He was quite the dapper figure, and this photo was likely taken by his partner in crime Dinny Lambert. They were both from Arklow in Co. Wicklow, Ireland, but had settled on the west side, what is now known as Chelsea, in Manhattan. This photo has generated many stories about Grandpa, and his banjo hat, seen in the photo, not to mention his pretty fantastic dress sense. We also have some amazing photos he took of his work on the subways he helped to build. I'll dig them out next. View full size.

New York circa 1910. Fifth Avenue at 25th Street looking north. From a collection of found nitrate negatives. The corner signpost shows Fifth Avenue and 25th street if you zoom in. The store on the left is Caswell Massey and Co., which had a 202 Fifth Avenue branch. I'm guessing the date because many of the photos in the collection are views of the Metropolitan Life tower and vicinity - 23rd Sreet Madison Square. The tower was the tallest building in the world from 1909 to 1913 and might have attracted the attention of a photographer when it was new. The dress and vehicles in the photo put it before 1920, I think. View full size.

Thomas Rogers came to Boston from rural County Mayo with his family in the 1870's as a young man and settled in Milton, Massachusetts. There he eventually met and married Mary Kilroy who had also emigrated from Mayo with her family. By 1900, the Rogers' had come to the city of Rye, New York, where Thomas, as a local estate manager, bought land and built a house that remained in the family for the next 70-plus years.

This is my first post to Shorpy, so I may as well start with the oldest of the photos I have inherited from my grandparents. This is a daguerreotype of my great-great-grandparents, Maria R. Vaughan and Martin Van Buren Jones on their wedding day in Marion County, Oregon, Oct. 29, 1854. They met and fell in love while crossing on the Oregon Trail in 1852 when he was 21 and she was 14. He was traveling alone, while she was with her parents and siblings, who settled SW of the Portland area. He went down the coast to just south of the California/Oregon border, where he settled and became one of the founders of Crescent City, California. Once settled, he went back north, married her, and brought her back to Crescent City, making her the first bride there. They went on to raise a large family. He was born in New York state in 1831 and died on his timber claim near Klamath, Del Norte County, California, on March 31, 1884. She was born in Peoria, Illinois, Dec. 14, 1837, and died in Crescent City on June 6, 1926. I grew up in her old house. View full size.
Fascinating storyIt would be interesting to know a bit more about their lives, but even so, the photo offers a lot to one's imagination. Customs, standards have changed so much in a hundred years, that one cannot help wondering what it will be like in another hundred years' time!

Another of my father's 1957 Kodachromes. Taken in my grandparents' yard, Hamburg, New York (south of Buffalo). My grandfather owned a lot of land and had to mow a huge yard--hence the impressive mowing machine. CarsThe men are standing in front of a Model A Ford, most likely a 1930. The car to the left is possibly a late 20's Buick. The car on the right is possibly another Model A Ford, also 1930, and appears to be a two door (Tudor) Sedan.

1. (Clothing, Personal Arts & Crafts / Tanning) the tanned outer layer split from a skin
2. (Clothing, Personal Arts & Crafts / Tanning) a person, tool, or machine that skives
The British or Scottish slang word means "a person who persistently avoids work or responsibility," and I'm willing to bet Grandfather didn't fit that!
I've got a couple skiving knives similar to this modern version among the leather tools from Dad's collection.

Aye aye sir....But ....the New York Aquarium to my knowledge moved to Brooklyn from Battery Park located in Manhattan in , 1957. That probably explains the taller than typical Brooklyn buildings that would be found in 1938. Brooklyn Heights is just a hop skip and a jump across the East River to Battery Park.
