About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Ross Island, Antarctica: 1974

Ross Island, Antarctica: 1974

December 1974. One typically accesses Antarctica via Williams Field, which serves both the U.S. McMurdo Station and New Zealand's Scott Base. In the background, we see a U.S. Air Force Lockheed C-141A Starlifter from the 60th Military Airlift Wing, headquartered then at Travis AFB in California. In all likelihood, its Antarctic journey was staged through Christchurch, NZ. In the foreground is a U.S. Navy Lockheed LC-130R Hercules, sporting a two-tone grey and orange livery. It is outfitted with skis and is otherwise configured for arctic operations. This aircraft was struck off charge in 2003 and was still parked in the AMARG boneyard in Arizona as of 2013.
