VINTAGRAPH • WPA • WWII • YOU MEAN A WOMAN CAN OPEN IT?

Arlene at 14: 1944

My then-14-year-old future mother poses for a picture at some social event with no idea that this tiny Autumn Fair souvenir will change the course of her entire life. Seems a friend of my maternal grandmother was also a friend of my paternal grandmother. With match-making in mind, this friend took this tiny photo and set it on her piano, with hopes that Howie would see it and ask about the girl. The ploy worked. He did. They dated. My mother proposed to Howard, and he said okay. They married in October 1951.
