Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

The fella with the bayonet on the far left looks straight out of Central Casting, only his bayonet isn't made of rubber, and there is no director to yell "cut, take 40 minutes for lunch."
The fellow in the front row, second from the left, has a look about him that says "this isn't over". I can see him in an officer's uniform 23 years later riding in a command car rolling eastward to exact his revenge.
