Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

I could come home again to my air-conditioned house and my washer/dryer and a time in which I don't have to spend 16 hours every day cooking, cleaning or making clothing for my family.
Amazing how sharp these photos are. You can almost imagine living in this old town back in 1887. No car and bus noises, no high tech clutter. Take me back.
