A publicity photo of the Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig, with my grandfather Earl Harper, a broadcaster with WNEW Newark in the 1930s. My grandfather died when I was way too young to know him, but I treasure this family memento and only wished I could have heard his many stories about those days in baseball history! View full size.

This photo was taken in the fall of 1968 in the backyard of our house on Hilda Ann Drive in Swansea, Ill. The guys would be running around buddies for the next year. From left are the two Scotts (my little brother is second Scott, acting with his usual goofball charm with an apple); my sister, Cindy; my good friend (and the first Scott's brother), Tom; and yours truly. It was after school (I'd just entered the eighth grade) and the boys had probably just finished practicing baseball in the huge yard behind our fence. To the left was my dad's beloved 1962 Chevy Impala although he's still at work since our second car, a dark blue 1968 Opel Kadette (anybody remember them?) isn't under the carport. Dad bought the four-cylinder Opel to commute to his job about 30 miles away in St. Louis. We would live at this address for about a year after which my dad's employer, Goodyear, transferred him (and us) to Madisonville, Ky. View full size.

When Babe Ruth came to town, the children followed. After my parents passed away, this photo was found among the personal items they left behind. My father Pete Miksich (to the right just above the Pirates kid) played baseball for the East Chicago Kiwanis Club. Born in 1911, he looks to be about 12 or 13. This photo was taken in June, 1925. George Herman Ruth loved children. Being an orphan, He took every opportunity to be with them. This photo may have come from a newsletter put out by the Grasselli Chemical Co. (Later E.I. Dupont), which had a chemical plant in East Chicago, Indiana. My dad worked there till his retirement.

Circa 1920s: My grandfather Edwin Shutan, (middle row, far left) played in a local baseball league. He was the team manager. They played in Humboldt Park and Garfield Park on Chicago's West side. When the gambling got heavy on the sidelines, Edwin decided he wanted no part of that, so he quit playing! Rexo was a manufacturer of chemicals and photo products. View full size.
