No. 10 Steel DrumThat's an early steel drum over there by the left corner of the building. Probably for oil or maybe kerosene, and known by its ICC Specification, No. 10.
Its shape was designed so that it could be handled with the same equipment as had been used for handling the wooden barrels it replaced, and furthermore its bilge shape added strength and resisted dents.
So how did they manufacture a container of this shape? They welded a steel cylinder (even earlier, riveted side seams were used), rolled in the head at each end, then filled the drum with high pressure water until it swelled to the desired shape!
50% taxDo I read 12 cents a gallon plus 6 cents tax for a total of 18 cents a gallon on the gas pump? Ouch.

Nighttime tag?Dave, could you please add a nighttime tag for outdoor pictures taken at night? I love pictures like this, and I'd like to be able to search for them.
This is a fantastic shot, taken by one of my favorite photographers. Maybe at the time they were considered mundane, but they're definitely art now.

I found in a Miami thrift store approximately 12 metal boxes containing a well organized collection of personal slides documenting a Dr. Eugene Birchwood's lifelong involvement with the Airstream trailer community. Only a single slide had his name written on it and from this I was able to research a small part of his life. He was a doctor based in Chicago. He was employed briefly by Airstream Trailer and document several international tours or roundups in the mid 1950s. Many slides were taken in Mexico and Europe. View full size.

El CastilloThis is El Castillo, Chichen Itza, Yucatan, of course.
I recall my first visit to Chichen. My dad drove the family there on an excursion from the city of Merida. Before heading out, he'd been assured he could find a refill of gasoline in Piste, the town nearest the ruins. We drove the length of Piste's only road twice with no sign of a gas station. My dad asked, and he was directed to the village hardware store, where a man sold gasoline out of milk cans, poured into the cars with a hose and funnel.
This was in 1972.
By the end of the decade, the resort of Cancun had opened up, and tourism in Yucatan changed dramatically.

Gas WorksNice shot. The large gas tank near Fort Mason, which no longer exists, caught my eye. I did some research and found that it was located at Bay and Laguna Streets. This interesting account of the 1906 earthquake discusses the North Beach Station:

3x5 Photograph found at a thrift Store, mounted on a loose page from a photo album.
The Gilmore Gas Station in the background was located at Wilshire Blvd and La Brea in Los Angeles.
I think the Car is a Packard.
Ed's RoadsterI can't find any pictures of Packards or anything else with an exposed gas tank as late as the 1920s, except for a few racing cars. Indeed, that whole trunk/tank arrangement is rather odd looking. I've got a feeling that this is custom coachwork, either in its entirety or at least from the passenger compartment back. Given the location - a couple of miles south of Hollywood and east of Beverly Hills - I'd guess that custom cars were relatively common in that area in the 1920s. Something about the car (the apparent lack of any provision for a top) has to me a very specific Southern California feel to it.

This is on the Kemptville Creek, behind our house on Clothier Street. I am wearing my first pair of real skates and am standing with Mr. Moffatt, our landlord. In the background is the back of the Clothier Hotel.
Nothing has changed in the background over the years. The gas station is now a car repair shop. To the left of us, just out of view is the old brewery which had been vacant for over 70 years when this photo was taken. Rumour has it that a microbrewery is moving in. View full size.

Filling up our 1959(?) VW 23 window sunroof bus in the gas station across the street from our parents' place in Agawam, Massachusetts in September 1967. My brother is standing next to the pump. A few minutes later we head off across the country. Today that particular bus, in that condition, would cost over $100K. Yikes. Scanned from a square format Ektachrome slide. View full size.
